Month-by-Month Guide
Climate conditions and crowd levels for each month of the year.
January sees Bruges at its quietest and coldest, with highs struggling to reach 6°C (43°F) and overnight lows dipping to around 1°C (34°F). Rainfall is modest at around 69mm, and while the sky leans toward the same flat grey as most of the North Sea winter, the stillness of the medieval streets has its own quiet appeal.
February temperatures barely shift from January, highs around 7°C (45°F), lows still at 1°C (34°F), and February is among the drier months in Bruges with around 61mm of rainfall. The pre-Lent carnival season occasionally adds a burst of activity, and the city's cafes and chocolate shops feel properly yours at this time of year.
By March, Bruges is beginning to exhale. Highs climb to 10°C (50°F) and lows ease to around 3°C (37°F), while rainfall drops to around 53mm, making this one of the drier months. The city starts preparing for the spring visitor wave. But you are still ahead of it in the first half of the month.
April is, by most measures, the most comfortable month to visit Bruges from a weather perspective. Highs reach 14°C (57°F), rainfall falls to just 43mm, the lowest of the year, and the city starts to feel alive again. Canal boats resume fuller schedules and walking streets invite exploration rather than a dash between sheltered spots.
May pushes temperatures to highs of 17°C (63°F) with lows around 8°C (46°F), and while rainfall ticks up slightly to around 58mm, the city is in its spring prime. Window boxes fill out and canal reflections look their best on a still morning, in the quieter neighborhoods away from the Markt.
June marks the beginning of Bruges's peak tourist season, and you will feel it on a weekend afternoon at the Burg. Highs reach 20°C (68°F), lows sit around 11°C (52°F), and rainfall climbs to 66mm, enough that an afternoon shower is plausible, though rarely a full-day washout. Evenings are long and pleasant, which partly compensates for the daytime crowds.
July is the warmest month in Bruges, with highs averaging 22°C (72°F) and overnight temperatures settling around 13°C (55°F). It is also when the city is at its busiest, canal boat queues grow long, the historic centre fills with tour groups, and restaurants in the Markt area book up. Rainfall hits 76mm, so pack something waterproof regardless of the forecast.
August mirrors July with highs of 22°C (72°F) and lows of 13°C (55°F), but rainfall edges up to 86mm. Crowds peak in the first half, then ease as European holidays end. Mornings and evenings give Bruges back its hush. Walk then.
September is the month seasoned travelers whisper about. Highs slip to 19°C (66°F), lows to 10°C (50°F), rainfall drops to 81mm, and the crowds thin. The light shifts, flattering the medieval stone. Cafes breathe again.
October turns the page to full autumn. Highs fall to 15°C (59°F), lows to 8°C (46°F). Rain rises to 84mm and moods swing weekly. Yet the canals blaze with color. Minnewater glows. Sight lines shorten.
November is Bruges at its quietest and wettest. Expect 91mm of rain, highs of 10°C (50°F), and lows of 4°C (39°F). The payoff starts late in the month. Christmas stalls appear. Markt and Burg sparkle after dark.
December is pure theatre. The Christmas market fills the squares. In hard years the canals freeze. Medieval stone suits the season. Nights drop to 2°C (36°F), days reach 7°C (45°F). Rain peaks at 94mm. Grey skies make the lights sing.
