Bruges has a temperate maritime climate, which basically means the weather is mild, damp, and famously changeable year-round. You won't get dramatic extremes, but you should always be prepared for rain, which is fairly evenly distributed across all seasons, with late autumn and winter (October to December) typically being the wettest. Summers are pleasantly warm but rarely hot, and winters are chilly and damp, with frost possible but heavy snow being relatively uncommon. For whatever reason, the humidity tends to sit around 70% consistently, which makes the chill feel sharper in winter and the warmth feel a bit heavier in summer.

Best Time to Visit

Beach & Relaxation
Late June through August. These are the warmest months, with highs around 22°C (72°F), though it's worth noting the Belgian coast is just a short trip away and rarely gets genuinely hot.
Cultural Exploration
April to June and September to October. The shoulder seasons offer milder temperatures (13-20°C / 55-68°F) and decent sightseeing weather, usually with fewer crowds than peak summer.
Adventure & Hiking
May, June, and September. These months typically provide the best balance of comfortable temperatures and slightly lower rainfall for extended time outdoors exploring the surrounding Flanders region.
Budget Travel
November to March, excluding the Christmas markets period. This is the off-season, so you'll find lower prices on accommodation, though you'll be dealing with the coldest, wettest, and shortest days.

What to Pack

Year-Round Essentials

Compact, Packable Rain Jacket
Rain can occur in any season, and having a lightweight waterproof layer is the single most useful item you can pack.
Comfortable, Water-Resistant Walking Shoes
Bruges is a city best explored on foot, and cobblestone streets can be slick and uneven, especially when wet.
Lightweight Layers (e.g., merino wool or synthetic base layers)
Temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day, and layering is key to adapting to the changeable weather comfortably.
Small Umbrella
A quick shower can pop up unexpectedly, and an umbrella is handy for staying dry while sightseeing.
Power Adapter (Type E/F)
Belgium uses a different plug socket than the US, UK, and many other countries, so you'll need an adapter to charge your devices.
Reusable Water Bottle
Tap water is safe to drink, and carrying your own bottle saves money and reduces plastic waste.
Scarf or Buff
Useful for adding warmth in cooler months and as a light layer against wind any time of year.

Spring (Mar-May)

Clothing
Lightweight sweaters or fleece, Long-sleeved tops, Lightweight trousers or jeans, A medium-weight jacket
Footwear
Comfortable walking shoes or boots (water-resistant is best)
Accessories
Folding umbrella, Light gloves and a beanie for early spring
Layering Tip
Dress in easily adjustable layers, as mornings can be crisp and afternoons can feel quite warm.

Summer (Jun-Aug)

Clothing
T-shirts and short-sleeved tops, Lightweight trousers, skirts, or dresses, A light cardigan or hoodie, Lightweight, quick-dry fabrics
Footwear
Breathable walking shoes or sandals with good support
Accessories
Sunglasses, Sun hat, Compact umbrella or rain jacket
Layering Tip
A light layer is still essential for cooler evenings and for sudden rain showers.

Autumn (Sep-Nov)

Clothing
Warm sweaters, Long-sleeved thermal tops, Jeans or thicker trousers, A warm, waterproof coat
Footwear
Sturdy, waterproof walking shoes or boots
Accessories
Warm hat, scarf, and gloves (especially late autumn), Umbrella
Layering Tip
Multiple layers are crucial, as the damp chill can seep in; think thermal base layer, insulating mid-layer, and waterproof outer shell.

Winter (Dec-Feb)

Clothing
Thermal base layers, Heavy sweaters or fleeces, Insulated jacket or parka, Warm trousers
Footwear
Insulated, waterproof boots with good grip for potentially icy cobbles
Accessories
Wool hat, thick scarf, insulated gloves, Ear muffs if you're sensitive to cold
Layering Tip
A three-layer system (base, insulation, waterproof/windproof shell) is non-negotiable for staying warm and dry in the damp cold.
Plug Type
Type E or Type F (two round pins)
Voltage
230V
Adapter Note
Yes, most travelers from North America, the UK, Asia, and elsewhere will need a plug adapter; a voltage converter is usually not needed for modern dual-voltage electronics.

Skip These Items

Heavy guidebooks (use digital maps and apps) Multiple pairs of high heels (impractical for cobbles) A huge selection of formal wear (the vibe is casual to smart-casual) Beach towels (if needed, buy locally for a day trip to the coast) Excessive amounts of shampoo/toiletries (easily purchased locally)
